Artificial Disc

Back and neck pain can be uncomfortable and unforgiving. Thanks to a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed by the neurosurgeons at North Texas Neurosurgical & Spine Center, patients with spinal pain are getting back to living their lives.

Artificial disc replacement can reduce pain and improve mobility for adult patients suffering from chronic low-back (lumbar) or neck (cervical) pain due to wear and tear or degenerative disc conditions.

Artificial Lumbar or Cervical Disc Surgery

If you have disc degeneration in only one disc in the lumbar or cervical spine, you may be a candidate for artificial disc surgery. Our team will discuss this innovative procedure with you and help you determine if it’s right for you.

As with hip or knee replacement, disc replacement surgery removes worn or diseased disc material and replaces it with implanted components. Our goals are to:

  • Remove the diseased disc
  • Restore normal disc height
  • Decrease back pain in the lumbar spine, or decrease neck pain and associated arm pain or weakness arising from the cervical spine
  • Preserve motion in the affected vertebral region
  • Improve your ability to function

Compared to other spine degeneration surgeries, such as spinal fusion, artificial disc surgery allows for quicker recovery time, more spine mobility, less stress on adjacent discs, and no need to harvest and use a bone graft in the case of lumbar disc surgery.

Surgery takes place under general anesthesia, and a small incision is made in the abdomen for lumbar disc surgery or the front of the neck for cervical disc surgery. Through this opening, a discectomy is performed to remove or replace the affected disc. Most patients stay in the hospital one or two days after surgery.

If you have degeneration affecting more than one disc, segmental instability, or any type of metabolic or hereditary/acquired bone disease, other surgical intervention will be considered. Our team will discuss your treatment options with you and support you every step of the way.
